I worked with a leader recently who told me she wasn’t “strategic” enough for the next level.

She had this idea that great leaders had to be big picture thinkers, constantly talking about vision and long-term strategy. That wasn’t how she worked.

She was the person who got things done.

But what I could see, in fact what was glaringly obvious to me:

The business relied on her because she had an unmatched ability to cut through the noise and turn ideas into action.

People came to her when they needed something fixed, fast!

She was the person who made sure projects actually happened.

And yet, she didn’t see that as strategic.

Here’s the shift I helped her make: Instead of focusing on what she wasn’t, she started recognising what she was.

She stopped saying, “I’m not strategic enough,” and started saying, “I bring executional excellence. Without me, this place would be stuck in ideas mode.”

She stopped seeing herself as someone lacking something and started owning the strengths she already had.
