You’ve hopefully gathered by now that I know a thing or two about helping women create the career they love AND be rewarded properly for it!
It’s been a particularly successful time in Generation Women world with so many successes…where my women are stepping up and getting great promotions, making big job moves, and of course raising their visibility!
I wanted to share with you some of the ingredients that get the big results. Of course we have the Generation Women method which gets you to focus on your fearless foundations, personal brand, working hard on your relationships, and amplifying your impact!
Those are the method, the RECIPE if you will. In order to make these things work we also focus on some key ingredients, and that’s what I want to share with you today.
1 – Confidence and mindset
If you want a successful career, you’ve gotta know you’re good and feel to your core (cue hair flick) that you’re with it. Confidence is one of those things most people can do with more of. I want to let you into a secret, the easiest way to tap into your confidence is to use your strengths!
Think about it, when you’re good at something it’s easy. The more you use your strengths, the stronger you feel. So start by identifying your strengths, and then ask yourself how can I use them more each day?
2 – Direction
It’s hard to make progress when you don’t know where you’re going. The interesting thing I’ve discovered when helping people with their direction is that most people know where they want to get to. It’s just they often don’t want to admit it to themselves because of FEAR.
So I’m asking you to give air to that ambition lurking away in the back of your mind. What if you write it down. Say it out loud (just to yourself or the dog for now…dogs don’t judge).
Allow yourself to daydream being in that position, and if your judge pops up, tell it to go away!
Now, what would it be like to share this with someone you trust? When we start to put our dreams out there it’s amazing how quickly they can become a reality.
3 – Strategy
Now you know where you want to go, it’s all about building the strategy to make it happen. Your strategy should be made up of…
- Your vision and goal
- If it’s a plan to get promoted, find out how things work in your company; what’s the process for promotions and so on?
- What’s the gap between where you are today and where you want to be?
- Create a plan focussing on steps to create impact (think brand, relationships, and impact).
- Add to your plan your development areas.
- And get some feedback.
4 – Motivation
To make it happen takes motivation and tenacity. Getting career results doesn’t happen overnight. And it doesn’t happen without putting the work in. So you have to have a plan to keep you motivated.
- Keep your eye on your vision (that’s why a vision board really helps)
- Recognise and reward your progress. Small wins lead to big results, actually recognising them fuels you to keep going.
- Talk about it with your trusted friend, ask them to help you keep positive and keep going
- Maybe it’s time to get a mentor if you haven’t one already
- And I can highly recommend a good career coach ?
5 – Support
Support is crucial on many levels. Of course you need people behind you to cheer when things are going well and pick you up when they’re not so great. In addition you need a support team to help you get there. Who can help you navigate the systems and structures of your organisation? Can anyone advise you and help you find new approaches to your challenges? Who will go out to bat for you, open doors, and be an ally in meetings?
It’s key you map out who you need in your team and actively build the connections and relationships to make it happen. There’s a lot of truth in the old adage ‘it’s not what you know but who you know that matters’.
6 – Fun
And finally, what’s the point if you’re not enjoying it! You have to remember, you don’t invest as much time in anything else, so it’s gotta be worth it. Invest wisely in something you love, with people that make it a great experience.
